XChat in Plain English
XChat is a private messaging app connected to the X network. You sign in with an existing X account, so your established X identity and contacts carry into the dedicated messaging experience.
It is not an unrelated app that happens to share the name. The verified Apple and Google listings are published by X Corp., and the current X Help article explicitly describes the XChat app.
Dedicated XChat App vs Chat Inside X
There are now two official ways to reach the product. The dedicated XChat app focuses on messaging, while the main X apps and x.com also include Chat. Both use an existing X account.
This distinction explains why older search results may say XChat only exists inside X: the product changed after many of those pages were published.
How XChat Works
X Help says Chat creates a private-public key pair for each user and asks the user to set a PIN. Supported messages, links, media, files, and reactions can be end-to-end encrypted.
X also documents disappearing messages, group conversations, safety numbers, voice notes, multi-device access, and message reporting. Some metadata, such as recipients and creation time, is not encrypted.
